| What is Pilates? Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates who created his Method of Body Conditioning or Contrology in the 1900's. He based his method of body conditioning on the principles of concentration, centering, control, precision, breathing and flowing movement. The series of exercises that he developed were designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body by focusing on the muscles of the powerhouse. They are a series of flowing dynamic movements performed on the mat or on specifically designed apparatus. What are the muscles of the Powerhouse? The muscles of the powerhouse include the abdominals, the buttocks, the spinal muscles, the diaphragm and the muscles of the pelvic floor. What is Classical Pilates? Classical Pilates is the authentic method of Pilates, in it's original form, as it was designed by Joseph Pilates. |
